In strength training, rowing (or a row, usually preceded by a qualifying adjective — for instance a seated row) is an exercise where the purpose is to strengthen the muscles that draw the rower's arms toward the body (latissimus dorsi) as well as those that retract the scapulae (trapezius and rhomboids) and those that support the spine (erector spinae).. Rowing, often referred to as crew in the united states, is a sport whose origins reach back to ancient egyptian times. it involves propelling a boat (racing shell) on water using oars.by pushing against the water with an oar, a force is generated to move the boat. the sport can be either recreational for enjoyment or fitness, or competitive, when athletes race against each other in boats.. When you think about rowing, the first things that probably come to mind are prep school crew teams and ivy league regattas—not a hardcore workout. and while strapping yourself into that boat.
